Kimbei worked as an assistant to both Beato and Stillfried. He started his own studio in Yokohama in 1881 and was a very successful business man. This print is an advertisement for Kimbei's studio, showing examples of the kinds of photographs that he could make, and giving the studio address.
Kimbei had this image printed on tissue in various colors and he used them as frontspiece/interleaving pages in his early albums. Very rare.Vintage print
The collecting world knows of him by the name "Kimbei," but this was actually his given name, not his surname. He presumably used this name so that his foreign clientele would not have a problem with pronunciation.
