It is a ruby glass ambrotype made of a paper photographic (albumen) portrait of Brown by James Wallace Black, which, in turn, Black made from a daguerreotype by Martin M. Lawrence of Brown in Boston. During the time of Brown's insurrection and subsequent trial, images of his visage were much in demand. Hence the creation of Black's albumen-print portrait. However, the existence of any other Ambrotypes from that image is not known. It is a rare cased piece, in excellent condition, housed in a thermoplastic Union case with russet, embossed velvet cushion. Please contact the gallery for a quote on shipping and insurance costs.
