Dater (born 1941), a photographer of renown, has long investigated the nude--more specifically, the notion of a subject being observed in the nude--in her work. In this oval self portrait, she engages with the topic with herself as subject. Her expression is characteristically frank, her body language classic, almost Ingres-esque. The format is as intimate as a hand-held mirror.
