Inscription on verso reads: "Yoshino River taken by Shinzo Fukuhara"
Printed on Opal paper.
This print comes from the estate of a former executive of the Shiseido Company and was discovered in Tokyo in 2004, the result of an estate sale. Extensive research has been done on this photograph but because so much of Fukuhara's work was destroyed, it is difficult to match with the Shiseido Fukuhara archive. Due to the Allied bombings of Tokyo in 1945 many of the negatives and prints by this artist have been destroyed, making this print exceptionally rare.
Fukuhara is often called the father of Japanese modern photography. He was also well known as the founder of the Shiseido cosmetics company. By 1923 he wrote the groundbreaking publication "Hikari to Sono Kaicho" [Light with its Harmony], which proposed the theory of applying the Japanese aesthetic of haiku poetry to photography. Please contact the gallery for a quote on shipping and insurance costs.
