DESCRIPTION:McBean, a singular talent in 20th-century portraiture, was known for his unique ability to incorporate surrealist elements into complex, highly crafted compositions in which no detail was left untouched. He immortalized celebrities from Laurence Olivier to the Beatles, his image of actress Vivian Leigh even appearing on a British postage stamp.
His chief artistic achievements--and the images most indicative of his personal interests—were a series of Christmas cards which he sent out every year. Most feature the artist himself in an unlikely self-portrait setting, as we see him here, as both maker and sitter, envisioning himself on the ground glass of the camera. Another version of this same image features the artist on the ground glass—nude.
All of the Christmas cards are original prints.
Photograph is on front of Christmas card, "Angus McBean Sends Greetings, Xmas 1953." Has McBean's signature in ink, on the card's interior and a printed greeting on the front.
