(114 x 114 mm)Photo Country: United States (USA)Photographer Country: United States (USA) DESCRIPTION: Very rich purple prints, which are all unmounted (probably removed from an album), appear to be published by either Watkins or Houseworth, and likely the latter. Hart sold Houseworth images, and some of these have been identified as his images, probably enlargements of stereo frames. Titles and negative numbers on the verso of prints in period pencil include: 1000 Placer Mining Columbia, Tuolumne County (scan); 1071 The State Capitol at Sacramento City; 1053 The Suspension Bridge on R.R. Bridge over the American River at Folsome, Sacramento County; 1075 The River Steamer at Sacramento City; 1056 R.R. and Suspension Bridge at Folsome, Sacramento County. Three albums of such sample views from the collection of The Society of California Pioneers are presented in "Points of Interest; California Views 1860 -1870" San Franciso, 2002, with a forward by Gary Kurutz, Introduction and Appendix by Peter Palmquist. The present group of five have numbers and titles in pencil verso, seemingly in Thomas Houseworth's hand. A letter by Houseworth that shows his handwriting is in "Lawrence & Houseworth/Thomas Houseworth & Co" by Peter Palmquist, National Stereoscopic Company, 1980, p. 44. These are numbered between 1000 and 1075, and thus correspond to images in Album 2 of the Society of California Pioneers albums, which contain titles numbered from 601 - 1200 ("California Views" p. 221). Although these views are not illustrated in "California Views," the numbers and titles correspond to those given to stereo views in the Palmquist book cited above.Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges. |
