DESCRIPTION:
This is a very rare exhibition size print. His granddaughter told me that the family did not know that a print in this size existed. Stamped on the verso with the photographer's name and his name printed by an unknown hand in ink, possibly by the photographer. Born in Nagyvarad, Hungary, in 1916, Berko was orphaned as a child and sent to Germany where he was raised by family friends who were involved with the Bauhaus movement. With the rise of the Nazis, he moved to England where he studied philosophy. A self-taught photographer, Berko worked under Otto Emil Hoppe in his early twenties. He lived in Dresden, Frankfurt, Berlin and Paris before moving to India in 1938 where he worked first as a camera man and later as a photographer and filmmaker. He also worked closely with a British ad agency in Bombay, making documentaries for a list of clients that included John Grieson and the British-India Army. His photographs began to appear in such magazines as Lilliput, U S. Camera and Du. After the war Berko accepted an invitation from Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, one of his Bauhaus associates, to teach film at the Chicago Institute of Design. In 1949 he moved to Aspen, Colorado, to work with Walter Paepcke's Container Corporation and to be the official photographer for the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies. He left two years later to do freelance work. He died on March 18, 2000 from complications following a stroke. He was 84. See: Berko, Ferenc Berko: 60 Years of Photography/The Discovering Eye, p.76. Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania and New York buyers must pay appropriate sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
