Construction of the Delaware Memorial Bridge
Construction of the Delaware Memorial Bridge
U.S. Steel was busy in the 1950s, building bridges – some of them commissions in the tens of millions of dollars – all across America. This collection, drawn straight from the company’s holdings, documents the fearless men who worked hundreds of feet off the ground, the raw materials of the construction, the waterways. They are, in short, historic, in-progress shots of amazing feats of engineering.

Some moments of note include: workers spinning pencil-thin wires into a massive 4,000-foot cable over the Delaware River in Wilmington for the Delaware Memorial Bridge (a $40 million dollar project, at the time); images of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge from water level as well as from Yerba Buena Island (one of its piers reached down 224 feet below water level); and a stunning scene of the as-yet unfinished Delaware Mem. Bridge at night, with bright work lights reflecting off the still water.

All the photos are 8” x 9.75”, and are clearly and succinctly documented on the verso.
