Everyone is traditionally clad in striking kimonos. The woman on the left smiles and reveals her purposefully blackened teeth. This practice, called "Ohagura," has been prevalent in Japan for centuries, and was often associated with a young woman's coming-of-age, or a married woman's status. It was considered both aesthetically pleasing and beneficial for oral health.
