Title in ink ("Rubbing Noses") on mount below image. This is traditional Hongi greeting among Māori people in New Zealand. A bit of light edge fading, but otherwise a rich print. Another title for the work is "Hongi, Whakarewarewa (with Guide Sophia)."
Probably by Alfred Henry Burton (c. 1834–February 2, 1914), who was a 19th-century New Zealand photographer. He was was born in Leicester, England, and emigrated to New Zealand to join his brother, also a photographer, in 1868.
