The photograph is by Pietro Dovizielli, who photographed Tivoli and worked in salt paper with this glass plate size. Another copy of this image is in the National Gallery of Canada, also identified as Dovizielli. Glass plate has cracked into three sections. Clearly a rare print, if not in the best tonality.
Pietro Dovizielli (1804-1885) was awarded a bronze medal at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where he exhibited twelve views of Rome and its environs. One French critic mused, “How can one not admire the luminous and warm-toned photographs exhibited by Mr. Dovizielli of Rome?"
