Description: 'Signed in pencil on the verso, limited edition number 2/25. Creator of Post-Pop Photographic Realism, Annie Leibovitz combines bold colors, the reality and mythology of celebrity, cultural memory and a playful feminine sang froid, in photographing musical, political and cultural icons of our times. In 1970, while a student at the School of the Art Institute of San Francisco she landed a job as staff photographer with Rolling Stone Magazine. Through her lens rock and roll stars, jazz and roots musicians were transformed into cultural royalty as were politicians, artists, movie stars, and hard working women. She quickly became chief photographer for Rolling Stone where on December 8, 1982, she made a portrait of John Lennon, naked, curled next to Yoko Ono, just hours before Lennon was assassinated. This image became Lennon’s memorial photograph, has been acclaimed as the one of the greatest magazine cover photographs ever and became Leibovitz photograph icon. In 1983 she left Rolling Stone to become the first contributing photographer for Vanity Fair and later with affiliating with Vogue Magazine. An enduring interest is her work on dancers and Olympic athletes in which she uses muted colors and blacks and whites to transform their torsos and biceps, their joy and determination into classical sculpture. Here she collaborates with the physical artistry of Mark Morris, Mikhail Baryshnikov, , and Carl Lewis. Other important work includes series on interesting of color dancers Women particularly on Susan Sontag but including Alice Waters, Las Vegas Show girls and other family Leibovitz family members as well as her documentary work from Nixon’s resignation,.
