Description: Jody Forster is one of the finest American landscape photographers working today. Using an 8 x 10" view camera to bring about meticulous realism, atmospheric effects, and a precise rendering of forms, Forster photographs a luminescence in nature in which he adds aspects of realism, idealism, and technical virtuosity. Like Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, he strives for clarity and sharpness of detail in his silver prints. His color prints evoke a highly tangible experience of atmosphere, perspective and space. Over the last 30 years Forster's work has attracted a huge following, partially because his direct views of the world offer a haven from much of postmodern photography's coded and analytical investigations.
Forster's spectacular, large format silver print photographs of southwest deserts, northern Mexico mountains and coastline, Nepal and Thailand, and the grandeur of Antarctica, reveal him to be a master of vision and technique. His dedication to the art and craft of photography is matched by his abilities as an adventurer and outdoorsman.
Forster was born in Chicago in 1948. Following a commission in the Armed Forces he studied with Ansel Adams, learning printing techniques from the master of the Zone System. In 1976 Forster began his life's work photographing the most spectacular scenery on the planet, searching for synergistic moments when sky and land formations are dramatically juxtaposed. Forster has produced a stunning and varied body of work over the last twenty-five years that captures the grandeur, power and gentler moods of nature.
Forster's silver prints are made laboriously by hand in his darkroom. Silver print photographs are available in 20" x 24" size. His photographs from Antarctica photographs are available as both black and white and color prints. The color negatives are digitally scanmed and then printed digitally on Fujicolor paper. Color work is available in 20" x 24" and 30" x 40" sizes. Forster works in open editions with each photograph numbered on the back.Signed. Copyright Jody Forster 1979. Edition numbered/open.
