Yampolsky is one of the premier photographers of Mexico, making compelling compositions with strong tonalities, even as she displays great compassion for her subjects. Born in Chicago in 1925, she emigrated to Mexico in 1944 and became known for her work as a printmaker, first working at the Taller de Gráfica Popular, and later as a photographer. (Yampolsky studied under Lola Alvarez Brava in the 1940s.) The Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, DC mounted a show of Yampolsky's works in Fall, 2007.
