About This Image

On the print, lower right corner: stamp of Gustave Le Gray's signature in red ink. On the mount, oval blind stamp "PHOTOGRAPHIE GUSTAVE LE GRAY & Co. PARIS" centered below the image, "No 12,049" and "No 103." handwritten in ink in lower corners, and blind stamp "E B" on upper right. Small pinholes in the four corners of the mount.

See: Aubenas, et. al., Gustave Le Gray, 1820-1884, pl.268.

Only one other copy of this rare image was noted in the catalogue, having just appeared on the market prior to its publication. This is clearly the superior print of the two. There is a major essay by Barthelemy Jobert on this photograph and another Le Gray image of the Pavé de Chailly, and Claude Monet's similar painting of the same name.
