Despite having no formal photographic training, William Klein managed to invigorate mid-20th century fashion imagery by simply rejecting the rules of the studio in favour of the on-location photo shoot. Born in 1928, Klein studied as a painter, but soon found that his most effective forms of expression were through photography and filmmaking. He was hired by Vogue in 1955 to finance his own personal projects, but the images he would produce for the magazine would go on to become some of the most iconic of the century.
Combining a photojournalistic style with his fashion imagery, Klein began to take his commissioned magazine photographs on location. From the streets of New York to Rome, he placed his models in the thick of bustling city life, creating enigmatic images that not only illustrated the chic fashion of the mid-20th century, but also commented on the various locations themselves. Often noted as having an ironic approach to the medium, Klein pushed the limits of the fashion image by utilizing movement and blur, employing telephoto and wide-angle lenses, and graphic contrast that defined both his photographic and film work.Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer.
